Martin’s Cove Trek – June 11-14

Watch out this is a novel!

Wednesday June 11 -We had to be at the church at 5 a.m. – so early! We just walked over about 10 minutes early. The Elder’s quorum was there loading the buckets on to the 5 chartered buses. Then the youth started to arrive. We waited for some of the late comers, then Pres. Roberts (stake pres.) gave a morning side devotional. Then about 6 am we loaded the buses and headed for Wyoming. As we were driving through Park City it was snowing really bad, I thought great, it is going to be freezing! Each person was assigned a pioneer name, of an actual person that was in the Martin or Willie Handcart companies. They gave us wristbands to wear with our pioneers’ name on it. My name was Zilpha Loader Jacques. The stake asked us to bring a "baby" (I just brought a doll) and we named it on the bus. We choose Alpha, because my pioneer lady, Zilpha, had a baby on the trek, like in August and he lived. She also had a two-year-old daughter that died about 1 week before they got to Salt Lake. So the rule was that the baby had to always be held, it could never be put in the handcart. The girls were really good to tend him and they even kind of fought over who got to hold him.

We stopped at Independence Rock and some hiked to the top. It was really windy and cold. It was super windy at the top, Ray said probably 60-mph gusts of wind that hurt his ears. Then we finished the ride to Martin’s Cove; it was about a 7-hour bus ride. When we got there it was SO windy. We went to a log building and had a presentation by a missionary and watched a movie. He told us to drink plenty of water and to stay on the trail because there were rattle snakes there. He also said if we saw any snakes in the campground to let the missionaries know and they would help them cross the veil (that drew a lot of laughs).

Our family consisted of Ray and I and 6 girls and 3 boys. We received our handcart and loaded our buckets, pillows, and water jug in it and headed towards the campground. Somehow we were the last handcart to leave. It was about a 2-½ mile trek to the East Cherry Camp ground. Then we set up our tents. We had a GIANT tent that all 6 girls stayed in and it was a PAIN to set up in the wind. It took practically all of us to set it up because we had to stand on all the corners to keep it from blowing away. It took us about an hour just to do that one. Then Ray and I set up ours (this little orange one) and the boys did theirs(red and black / yellow and black) The girl's tent has the handcart tipped up next to it.

We had a food committee that cooked all the food for everyone. Then we just took our cooler over to them and they filled it with our families dinner. It was really nice to not have to worry about cooking too. So for dinner the first night we had mashed potatoes and gravy, corn and chicken. Each item was in a gallon size Ziploc bag, which made it awkward to serve because we just had little plastic spoons. So I used some of the cups to scoop out the gravy and corn and two little spoons for the potatoes and chicken. It was so windy and cold that the all the kids just ate in their tents. But since our tent was so small, We just tipped the hand cart up and that provided a little bit of a wind brake, so I just put my bucket next to it and sat there. I was so happy that I brought gloves, an ear warmer thing and my big winter coat because I needed them – it was cold!

After dinner we went to a pioneer story presentation by the missionaries then walked to a gravel parking lot for Square Dancing. We walked back and had our family devotional on journals. We had it in the girls’ tent to be out of the wind, but it was so LOUD in there from the tent flapping in the wind that it was hard to hear each other. I encouraged them all to write in their journals during the trek and then we all got ready for bed and went to sleep. Well, I got in my tent and tried to sleep. It was so loud with all the wind and tents flapping, that I did not sleep well that night!

Thursday we got up and the wind was still blowing hard. We had a number 10 can given to us and we filled it with water and put it on the fire to heat up. It got so much ash in it but we just added the hot coca to it and you couldn’t see how GROSS the water looked. We had our morning devotional, it was an idea from the stake about when the Martin Company’s flour rations were cut to 4 ounces of flour per day per adult. I passed around a baggie with ½ cup of flour, it only provides 450 calories, and that is all they got for one day! The kids only got 2 ounces a day. It said that in order to pull the handcart a man needed 4000 calories a day. I can not even imagine how hungry they were. Several of the fathers gave their rations to their kids, and then the dads died because they didn’t have the strength to keep going.

After breakfast we loaded up our cart and trekked to Dan Jones Cove. We sang songs as we waited for everyone to arrive then Pres. Vogel of the stake presidency gave a talk about what took place there, I didn’t know about any of it. They had all the ma’s and pa’s and aunts and uncles stand side by side along the trail as the youth left, to represent the 50+ people that died in Martin’s cove. From Dan Jones Cove we walked up to Martin’s Cove, the actual cove where the pioneers stayed for 4 days. It was a SILENT walk, to reflect on what happened there. I kept thinking that the wind was probably as bad and instead of being 59 degrees like it was for us, it was freezing and there was 18 inches of snow; they also didn’t have warm coats or even good shoes if they had shoes. I also thought about the real Alpha, he would have been 3 months old in those conditions, it’s a miracle that he survived when so many did not.

After the walk we ate lunch at a pavilion with picnic tables so that was nice and the sun came out. We were supposed to cross the Sweetwater river, but it normally comes up to a person’s knees and it was waist high, so they decided not to. The weather changed back to cloudy and we could see a storm blowing in. We trekked a bit then they asked the boys to leave to serve in the Mormon Battalion and a SR sister missionary talked to just the women. We got rained on and then it hailed, then just the women pulled the handcarts up a huge hill. We were lucky that there we 7 of us to pull and push the cart. Some of the families only had 3 women total and it was really hard for them. The men lined the hill on both sides of the trail and were silent as we pulled up the hill past them. During the whole trek so far, I had not pushed or pulled the handcart because we were told that the youth should do it. But I helped push up the hill and held on after that. It was amazing how it pulled me along, I can see how it would of helped to just hold on, it kept me going the same pace, where as before I would fall behind because I didn’t have that momentum pulling me along. It is a lot like the gospel, it pulls us along though hard times. If we let go, it is harder to keep up, and you kind of get left behind.

Then we trekked back to the campground. I think that day we trekked 7 miles. When we got back to camp it was still raining. One of the poles on the big tent had broken and most of the girls’ stuff was wet. So Ray helped them take their stuff over to the semi to dry and rigged up the pole so the tent would still stand. It continued to drizzle and there was not much cover. I got in our tent and took a nap for a bit while it rained. It stopped raining so we could eat dinner, then we broke up and went to our individual wards for "ward time". Members of our ward shared some pioneer stories about their ancestors, then we all headed over to the big amphitheater for the Ephraim Hanks presentation. The SR couple did an excellent job with their presentation. They had the Pioneer Express come and they brought each youth a letter from their parents. Then they had a stake testimony meeting. I was amazed at the testimonies of these youth. It got dark and REALLY cold by the time it was over. We headed back to camp, sat around the campfire, had our family time and devotional and then went to bed. Oh, I forgot to mention that the wind died down after the storm -so it was pleasant, but a tad cold.

Friday morning there was frost on our tent, but I slept much better. The wind was still minimal, so everyone seemed pleased. We had our family devotional and ate breakfast then we struck camp (packed up everything) and then trekked back to the visitors’ center. It was actually quite warm, and I didn’t need my coat anymore. We loaded the buses and ate our lunch on our way to Rock Creek.

When we arrived at Rock Creek they sprayed us for ticks – I HATE TICKS- I am paranoid about them. I didn’t see any, but people I talked to afterward did. I still think that maybe some came home with us and I hope they aren’t in our back yard or worse in our house. We set up our camp, it went much smoother because there wasn’t much wind.

We ate dinner, then we went down to the Amphitheater for a fireside. They told stories about the Willie Handcart company. The Willie Company was 2 weeks ahead of the Martin Company. Rock Creek is where 13 members of their company died, just after crossing Rocky Ridge. There are some grave sites and markers there at Rock Creek. Then we silently walked back to our campground, as we stopped at the different graves and markers. We had 2 hours for family time that night, and the stake gave us some things to do. The youth each wrote a letter to their parents. Then they were supposed to write a personal statement of commitment to being steadfast and immovable. Then we played a game as a family – "signs" – I laughed so much, it was fun. We had a great group of kids. They were all willing to do what we asked. I was really impressed with the girls too, they all became great friends. Ray and I went to bed, a lot of kids stayed up REALLY late that night. Our girls sang songs forever, but I luckily acquired a pair of earplugs from my friend Cindy, so the singing didn’t keep me from sleeping.

Once again on Saturday there was frost on our tent. When I got up 2 of our boys were awake and sitting by our empty fire pit. I asked them where our wood went and they said some one took it, I was kind of mad! I wanted to get some hot water going for hot coca. I went over to the Viertel’s camp site and they had a big fire going, we got a can of water going in their fire , two of her boys left with a handcart and came back with all this wood. I had them tell me where they got it, then I grabbed my two boys and we went and got us some wood. They got the fire going, so that was nice. We ate breakfast and had our devotional, then we stuck camp and loaded everything up. This picture is at Rock Creek, yes the white stuff on the hill behind us is SNOW!

The buses came back to get us and we left around 10 a.m. We got back to the church around 4:30 p.m. It was hot back in UTAH! Tennille called me and said she would be to my house in about 40 minutes. She said that Mike and Ashlee had their baby 3 weeks early and he was in the hospital on oxygen and a feeding tube. My parents had come up earlier that day to see baby Jenson. She also said that Kara had gotten an ear infection and Tennille took her to the Instacare on Thursday.

Tennille got here and Kara looked so sad, her eyes still looked like she didn’t feel good. She really didn’t know what to think. I held her and asked her what my name was but she didn’t want to say anything. Trent and Tyler didn’t seem to care if they were home or not. The first thing Tyler asked me was if he could play the "castle game" – good grief child! My parents arrived shortly after that. They had cell phone pictures of Jenson. He looked so cute! We ordered some pizza, then after we ate my parents and Tennille headed home.

Ray left for Scout camp Monday (June 16th) They went to Moab. They got back Wednesday. He worked Thursday then that night Ray and I went to a work audit group BBQ in Springville. (Randy and Keri tended our kids - thanks guys!) Then Friday Ray left for Logan to run in the Wasatch Back. He got back last night at 5 p.m. It has been quite the 2 weeks for him.

No kids for two days

My parents said they would tend while we went on the trek. Originally I was going to meet my parents half way and drop off the kids, but Tennille decided she would drive them down for me. (bless her heart!) It saved me so much time. Anyway, my Grimshaw family in Enoch decided to have a birthday party for my grandma and Tennille decided to go so on Monday (June 9) she came at 1 p.m. to pick up my kids. Trent and Tyler were so excited to go. They kept asking me when they got to go to grandma’s WITHOUT me. Tyler also kept saying "how come we only get to stay for 6 days?" Anyway, we loaded them in Tennille's van and I ran inside to get a couple more things. When I went back outside Tennille had the movie going and they wouldn’t even respond to me (the boys) Kara looked at me and said "mommy?" and started to cry, she realized I was not going. She quit crying as they drove away and I think they did ok on the way down. Tennille and my mom said Kara called them mom. Tennille, I still can’t believe that you drove down there with all 5 of them by yourself!

I kind of cried for about a minute, then I got on with all the stuff that I still needed to get ready. We still hadn’t decided what to sleep on. I got the tent measurements from Ray and went to the store to find an air mattress. I had a hard time finding a full/double, our tent was tiny and that was the biggest that would fit. I also got snacks and other last minute items. When Ray got home that night he didn’t know what to do with himself, he asked me what we used to do before we had kids. It was quite ODD not having them around, but they were having fun at grandma’s.

Tuesday I found an air mattress and it came with a battery pump so I was glad and it was super inexpensive. I spent the whole day getting ready. Then we went to the church at 6:30 p.m. for the bucket weigh in and to take all our stuff over there. Each of us had a 5 gallon bucket that we used as a suitcase and it couldn’t weigh more than 17 pounds. All of the youth had the same requirements and so the stake weighed them and stored the buckets by families in the gym. We stayed there until all 9 of our kids brought there’s and then we went to the store to get some candy for Ray (well for me to, but it was Ray’s idea) When we got home I remembered that I hadn’t finished my apron, so I sewed that real quick then it was off to bed.

June 5-7, 2008 ~~Lagoon

I haven't posted for eons. I am far behind but since this is kind of my journal I want to at least mention what we have been doing for the past 3 weeks.

On the 5th we headed up to North Salt Lake and stayed at a hotel with all of Ray's family (parents, siblings and their kids minus Brad) The kids had fun swimming in the pool (except for Kara she freaked out - not sure why) Then we had popcorn and root beer floats before going to bed.

We spent the next day at Lagoon. I thought it was going to be warm and so I dressed everyone in shorts. It was kind of chili and rainy but we did have jackets. It actually was better than the scorching sun. The kids had fun. Trent was tall enough to go on some of the roller coaster rides with Ray. Tyler was just about a 1/2 inch to short. Ray thought that maybe they would let him on the Spider, so they waited in line and then when they got to the part where there was a lagoon worker, she said no. Which of course hurt Tyler's feelings, poor guy, he was so sad! Maybe next time we go (August) he will be tall enough. We stayed until 4 p.m. then went back to the hotel for some pizza. Then all the adults (Minus Ken, Louise and me) went back to the park. I wasn't feeling very good.

We got up Saturday and came home. We had a lot of stuff to get ready to go on the trek. Later that night most of us went to dinner at the Olive Garden - YUM!

Thanks for the fun "family reunion" Ken and Louise! It makes for some great memories. As Ray read to me last night from some advertisement, Kids don't remember their favorite day watching T.V. How true, How true!
We have a tradition of doing something once a year as a family and I am so glad that that tradition is going strong. It is always so much fun for all of us.

Productive Weekend

We had a fabulous weekend. We worked in the yard all day Saturday putting in our drip lines. I am so excited to have them in, my garden will be glad too so that it gets water when we are gone this summer (which is going to be A LOT!)

On Monday we worked in the basement, cleaning up junk. It took all day! I finally went though stuff that I have needed to for years, old baby boy clothes and just tons of junk! I am taking a lot of it to the D.I. It looks so much better down there. We also got the ping pong table cleared off so we can play that again. We played a game and Ray beat me, but he let the boys both beat him.

Tyler graduated from pre-school last Friday. He will go again next year because he misses the deadline. Trent’s last day of school is this Friday.

I have been trying to get ready for the trek, we leave in 2 weeks – crazy, still so much to do.
Anyway, thought I would post since I haven’t forever.

A whole bunch of random . . . .

It seems like I haven’t posted forever. We have been so busy it seems. We were asked to go on the Martin’s Cove Trek with our stake (for Youth Conference) as Ma’s and Pa’s. We had a "kick-off" activity last week. We got to meet our kids (we have 9) and we played some pioneer games and square danced. Anyway, there is a lot to still do. We are supposed to dress in pioneer outfits so I have been working on that (kind of). I am excited to go. My parents are going to tend our kids (we will be gone for 4 days). I am a little nervous about all the walking/hiking. I bought some new shoes so I am trying to break them in. I also am going to invest in some anti-blister socks, I am hoping they will really help. I think it will be a wonderful testimony building experience. It still is so amazing to me that the pioneers crossed the plains to go to Salt Lake. I have been reading about a lot of my ancestors the last couple of days. I thought that all mine came to Utah on the train, but it turns out some of them actually came in covered wagons. The sad thing is the info I have just says things like "she crossed the plains with her sister and walked the whole way" – that’s it, no details, no stories, nothing about their trials, their triumphs, their faith, well, I guess it shows their faith, they just walked west to build Zion. It is simply amazing! I think we have a lot to learn from them. We go June 11 – 14th.

I also have been working in the yard a lot. I bought some strawberry plants (25) and got them planted. I hope they work. My neighbor gave me some raspberry plants and I planted them as well (there are only 2 of them). I have also been weeding a lot. We sure have A LOT of weeds. I hope to plant my tomatoes this week. They have done well in the little jiffy-7 peat pellets. I am hardening them off right now. My mom said to do it for 5 days or so. I hope they get used to outside they have been living the sheltered life sitting in my window sill protected from the wind – it’s time for the real world little tomatoes!

I was sick last week for 4 days (I had some flu bug that gave me really bad diarrhea and made me feel pregnant – I’m not though) I am so glad to be feeling better, because they say if you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything!

Ray took the boys to the Fathers and sons outing. They had fun camping and being outdoors. Kara and I just ran some errands and I worked in the yard while she took a really long nap on Saturday.

I had a good Mother’s Day yesterday. The boys gave me flowers and cards that they made at school. Of course they wanted me to share the candy with them, which I did.

Enjoy the random pictures.

This one of Trent was on Cinco de Mayo - they made these sweet hats at school.

63 Onions

I have been wanting to plant some onions for a while. My mom told me that she has bought them at Wal-Mart in the past and I found them there on Monday. They just came in a bunch. Anyway, Trent and Tyler helped me plant them. There ended up being a lot more than I really wanted, but we planted all 63 anyway. So come July (?) if anyone needs onions, you can have some. That is if they work. The boys also helped me plant some potatoes. I got the "seed" at Cal-Ranch (it really is just a potato with "eyes" on them). I hope they work too.

It was a way nice day on Monday (like 76) and over where my little garden is, it gets really HOT (I think because it is the south side of our house and the fence reflects light), anyway, I guess from bending over my shirt wasn’t covering my backside all the way and I got a little red strip of sun burn right above my pants, it was funny. I didn’t realize that my shirt was pulled up!
Kara loves this Old MacDonald book. She says E-I-E-I-O when she wants to read it.
I think it is funny that her baby is sitting by her on the bench. She put it there.

First family campout to Zion

We had a GREAT weekend. We left here on Thursday morning and went down to my parents. The kids were so excited to go to grandma and grandpas. They had fun just playing and being there. That night we celebrated my 32nd birthday, yes I am 32 – every year I can’t believe how old I am getting. My mom made a yummy dinner - Thanks mom! Everyone sang to me and I blew out my candles; I blew all but one out – dang! We played some Dutch Blitz – a vonderful goot game! It was the first time I had ever played, it was fun, but maybe that’s because I won! Then my mom and I went to "town". We went to the most awesome place in Cedar to shop – Wal-Mart. I found myself some cute Bermuda shorts, I am way excited about my new shorts. Too bad my legs are whiter than a ghost!

That night Kara did not sleep well. First of all Trent threw up and he was so out of it that he laid back down in the bed where he had just thrown up and fell a sleep – sick! My mom came downstairs and told me that he had thrown up. I went up there and it reeked! I had him take a bath and he didn’t want to wash his hair but I made him because it was covered in throw up – I seriously was sick to my stomach. Anyway, the commotion woke up Kara. I got everything cleaned up in the bathroom and my mom took care of cleaning up the bed. We got Trent back to sleep and I held Kara and fed her for a little while. Then we went back down stairs and she would NOT go to sleep. She would cry, then calm down and start playing. Finally at 4 a.m. I took her and we went to another room. Needless to say, it was a long night and so we slept in until about 8:30 a.m. Then we got up and left for Zion.

When we arrived in Zion we set up our camp. Trent and Tyler made their own little fire pit and pretended to roast leaves. It was a beautiful day!We road up to Weeping Rock on the shuttle bus and then hiked that. Afterwards the kids went down to the river and played in the water for a bit. Then we road up to the Temple of Sinawava. Then hiked the Riverside Walk trail – which was the perfect hike for me. It is mostly flat and is 1 mile up (and of course 1 mile back). It is where the Narrows trail comes out. When we got there the boys and Ray played in the water. I didn’t get in the water, but Ray said it was cold. I remember one time I did get in it and it was FREEZING! Kara was ready to go and kept pulling on me to go and she wanted to get into the backpack. So I got her ready and she kept saying "GO!" that is one of her favorite words. Anyway, we headed out. She ended up falling asleep on the way back, which was good , she needed a nap. Then we road the shuttle back to the starting point and walked to our camp site. Then we went out to dinner at a Pizza and Noodle place in Springdale. It was good pizza! When we got back we stared a fire and roasted marshmallows and made smores. The boys had a blast roasting marshmallows, who would of thought? It was starting to get dark so we got ready for bed. Ray and the boys slept in the tent and Kara and I slept in the van. We folded down the middle and back seats/bench and put an air mattress in there. Kara slept good, I kept waking up cold, for some reason my blankets kept falling off. It also got really windy in the night. I did sleep better than the night before, so that was good.

We got up around 7 a.m. and Ray cooked us some "mountain man breakfast" in the Dutch oven. IT was REALLY good. After breakfast we cleaned up camp and went back to my parents. We stayed there a couple of hours then headed home.

We had a really good time. This was our first time camping as a family, I am sure there will be many more!

Trampoline

On Saturday we got the boys a trampoline. They love it! We should of gotten it years ago. It's going to be countless hours of fun!

Yesterday was such a beautiful day! You would of thought it was summer it was so warm. The boys played out side most of the day. I tended my friends’ kids then we switched and she tended mine so I could run errands. It was so wonderful! Thanks P!

Here are some of my tulips that are starting to bloom. I got them last year for FREE from the park near by (they pull out all the bulbs and people can take them) anyway, I had no idea what color they would be, most are yellow (I was hoping for pink) but what can I say they were free and they are still pretty. The only problem is that most of them are SO small. I don't know if it is my soil or if I planted them to deep. I think it is the soil / lack of water. We still need to install a drip line up there. I probably planted 125. I hope I can get some more in May for next year. I got some two years ago and most of them were pink so I was happy! Why do I love pink?

I have been couponing a lot. I am focusing on getting food storage and stocking up on things. The economy is scaring me, so I am just filling up my cupboards and my freezer.

Today it is back to cold again. There is a storm rolling in, but it will warm up again this weekend. The boys don’t have school this week because of spring break. Yesterday gave me a glimpse of what summer will be like. I think it is going to be a good summer.

So I have to share what I have been doing with my boys. They are addicted to a computer game that they call "The castle game". Tyler wants to play it ALL day and cries and whines and cries some more to play it. So I tried a couple of things, like taking away the privilege if he peed his pants (which was happening a lot) but that didn’t really work. So then I decided to make some "tickets" for a ½ hour of computer playing. On Mondays they get 3 computer tickets and 2 movie tickets. Anyway, last week Tyler used all of his computer tickets by Tuesday morning and Trent had used one but when he got home from school that was all he wanted to do. I told him that he had to eat lunch, do his homework and put away his coat, shoes and backpack before he could use his ticket. He cried for like a ½ hour saying why do I have to do 5 things just to do 1 thing. Finally I said that he could earn an extra minute for each item. I was just throwing that out there, and surprisingly he said o.k. So then Tyler wanted to earn minutes too, he cleaned up his room, made his bed, cleaned the living room and sorted the laundry. He kept asking me how many minutes do I have now? And I would say 15 , and then he would pick up one toy and ask now how many minutes, 15, I kept doing this and he never caught on, it was hilarious. They both kept saying mom what else can I do, what else? It was a great way to get them to clean.
That night as they were going to bed Tyler told Ray that he was going to mess up the house tomorrow so he could earn more minutes – AAHHHHHHHHH not the point! I told them we could find plenty to do and not to mess up the house on purpose.

So we are going on week two of this ticket stuff. I think it is working great. Tyler wakes up in the morning willing to eat, get ready, make his bed and clean up. This is a big deal because that kid usually wakes up whining saying "why do I HAVE to?" They also are doing better about listening to me because I take away minutes if they don’t do what we talked about them doing.

On to Kara. She is a funny little girl. I think she is going to be a very clean person. The other day the boys got cracker crumbs all over a chair in the kitchen. Kara saw it and started saying "Ahh Oh" like she had spilled her milk, I went over there and she was pointing to the cracker crumbs and she wanted me to clean them up.

The other day she also got into the babywipes she brought them out to the kitchen and started wiping down her baby’s face – funny funny girl!

snow, snow go away!

It seems like I haven’t written much about what we have been doing lately.
This morning when we woke up Ray said that it snowed. I just thought it was a little dusting, then Kara could see through the side of the curtain in the kitchen and she was saying" Ah Oh" and pointing outside, there was more snow than I was thinking.
Here are a couple of pictures of the yard. The boys like to tip the lawn chairs upside down and make ships out of them. They used some empty water bottles for their guns under the ship – nice. Just yesterday they were out riding their scooters, today the scooters are covered in snow. It will probably melt tomorrow. Got to love it!

I like to go to the dollar store and I always seem to buy things we really don’t need. I thought this princess tiara and wand were cute, Kara kept it on just long enough for me to snap this picture.
Trent started spring soccer this week. They have games twice a week. March seems way to early to be starting soccer. Last year it didn't start until April. I forgot my camera so no pictures - sorry!
Ray is still way busy with work, hopefully only a couple more weeks of busy season.
I will be happy when it warms up again so I can start working in the yard. I have a lot that needs to get done.
I started some seeds in my window seal with the Jiffy-7, they are peat pellets(Wal-mart) that seem to work well for growing. This will be my first year planting my own tomatoes. Last year I didn't grow tomatoes outside and the year before I bought them from Wal-mart. We will see if they work. I have done herbs and some flowers before (in the Jiffy pellets), but most of them didn't survive outside once I planted them. I guess I need to "harden" them off better before I plant them. I hope the outside planting outcome is better this year.
Sorry all the paragraphs are all running together. I have tried 3 times to put spaces in it and even though it shows it like that in the prepost area when I "publish" it , all the paragraphs are squished together. How do I fix it?

1 year blog anniversary

Well, I've been blogging now for a year, not that I am very consistent, but it has been a good thing for me. It definitely helps me take more pictures of my kids. I also love blogs because I have been able to reconnected with old friends. I love reading about what is going on in your lives!

We have just been busy, but honestly not really doing much.

Here are some of the things that Kara likes to do lately (she makes me laugh!)

*She loves to get into her brother's candy (they got some on St. Patrick's day) This morning she came walking into the kitchen with a Reese's peanut butter cup - her favorite

*She also likes to put on other people's shoes. here she is in Trent's snow boots.

*She likes to "play" the piano

*She LOVES to sit in baskets and anything just her size.

*and she loves her baby!

side note there is a sweet deal going on at Albertsons. Their Kellogg's cereal (see store for varieties) are 3 for $5.00, and if you buy 7 you get a $10.00 off your next shopping coupon and you can use that to buy more cereal. So basically you get 7 boxes of cereal for 1.69 plus tax. There are some coupons out there that sweeten the deal, but even without coupons this is a HOT sale.

Quack!

Today the weather was nice so I took the kids to the park. We went to see the ducks in the pond and they seemed hungry. Kara had a graham cracker and we threw it out to them, they were all fighting over it, so we drove home and got some old frozen bread to feed to them. They must have been STARVING because they came up on the shore right by us, usually they just stay in the water. Anyway, the kids had fun and I got some good pictures. Kara was apparently starving too, because she helped herself to the bread.

Mom’s little helper

Kara is starting to understand things much better. She has become my little helper. She likes to help me put the clothes in the washer (it’s a front loading one) and then she has to shut the drawer thing that I pour the soap into, half the time she tries to shut it before I get it all poured in. She also will take things to the laundry room for me if I ask her to.

She likes to make sure things are shut, drawers, cupboards and doors. If I have left them open she shuts them for me. Now all I need her to do is clean up the house and put away all my cups (yes we still live in cup land).
Her favorite thing to say is Mama! This is how she gets me to do what ever it is that she wants. Yesterday at breakfast time she came walking down the hall with her booster seat saying Mama and shaking her head yes. She has been eating pancakes for breakfast and I just cut them up on a plate and she will usually feed herself with a fork, sometimes she has issues getting the pieces on the fork, she will hold out the fork to me and say Mama and shake her head. It is funny and cute.
Today she started saying blanky and baby – they basically sound the same, but one time she was holding the blanket and the other time her baby so she is getting it.

I was cooking and had my apron on and so I put her apron on her, she looks so cute, she doesn’t like it on though and wouldn’t hold still for the pictures so I had to hold her in place.

I'm going to work my ticket if I can . . .

We had a good week last week. On the 13th we went to our ward’s scout banquet. I didn’t have to make anything they just fed us dinner, the priests actually made it and they did a great job! We had dutch-oven beef stew with potatoes and carrots, rolls and salad. For dessert they had dutch-oven peach cobbler, and a cheery chocolate cobbler with ice cream- yummy! – I was so excited to NOT have to cook dinner. Ray had to conduct the meeting, so that meant I sat alone with the three kids. Kara is obsessed with running around in the halls at the church (she also loves to do this during church) so she did NOT want to stay in the cultural hall where we were eating. Trent, who normally will eat most things, did not want anything but rolls (great dinner for him = 3 rolls with butter – that’s nutritional) Then they had the program, it got to be quite lengthy, then the reason we went arrived, Ray received his Wood badge beads. I tried to take pictures and Kara wanted to go up front to be with Ray so that didn’t help, and the boys kept walking in front on everyone while the presentation was going on, it was kind of a fiasco! The lighting was HORRIBLE at the church I had the flash on but because I zoomed in this is the best one I got - grrr! After he got his beads and sang the Gilwell song it was around 8 pm (it started at 6:30) and it still wasn’t over. Ray excused those "who needed to go" and so we came home. My title is for those who know the Gilwell song - see this about Ticket.

The next day was valentines. Ray got me flowers – what a wonderful husband! I made a little scavenger hunt for the kids and hid a little gift at the end (under the kitchen sink) along with presents and cards from the grandparents. I think the kids had fun. Trent had his valentine’s party at school and Tyler had his the day before. They both had fun exchanging valentines. I am not sure why I didn't take pictures - dang!

Kara had her 15 month well baby visit this week. For some reason she FREAKED out when the nurse tried to measure her head and length. Then when the doctor came in she didn’t want him touching her either and just fought to get off the table, you would think he pinched her the way she was screaming. Then the most lovely part of the visit, the three shots. She wouldn’t hold still to even get her legs cleaned with alcohol, so I held her arms and the nurse held her legs and gave them to her, so sad! The nurse commented that she sure was strong – Kara is still super small, in the 2% for weight, that girl will not eat. On a brighter note she is understanding more each day. She can give kisses, it is so cute! I tell her to kiss her baby doll and she does. She can say ball, bye-bye and ba-ba (for bottle) not that she drinks from a bottle (at this point I wish she did) but she holds up her fake one to feed her baby and says "ba–ba" – it is cute. She also is finally getting some more teeth, you can see her 4 teeth kind of in this picture.
